Anjo (meaning ‘stable/peaceful’ in Japanese) is a particularly interesting newcomer from the land of the rising sun. It is produced from local barley and water. The Niigata distillery chose to mature these single malt whiskies in Mizunara Oak Casks. This Japanese Oak is known for its distinctive floral and spicy tones. It is also known to be a porous type of wood, which makes it difficult to maintain the Mizunara casks. Whisky aging in Mizunara tends to have a high percentage of Angel’s Share. Niigata Anjo Single Malt Whisky is produced in a very small batch: only 3000 bottles were released.
