Port Ellen 35 Years Old Hunter Laing Old & Rare 1978 is a rare single malt from the closed Islay distillery Port Ellen, bottled by Hunter Laing for the Old & Rare – A Platinum Selection range. The whisky was distilled in September 1978 and matured for 35 years in a single sherry butt. It was bottled in October 2013 at 56.5%. The bottle comes in a nicely crafted and sturdy wooden box. The Port Ellen distillery on Islay was established in the 1820s. At first it operated solely as a malt mill but a few years later it was developed into a distillery. Port Ellen was mothballed in 1983, although its malting is still in operation to this day and supplies all other Islay distilleries. Since its closure, Port Ellen has become one of the most sought-after whiskies in the world. Increasingly rare, spirit produced at the distillery demonstrates some of the finest character found on the island of Islay. Only 231 bottles of Port Ellen 35 Years Old Hunter Laing Old & Rare 1978 have been released.
