The Akkeshi Distillery is located on Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost and second-largest island. Production started in 2016, and the distillery’s first single malt was released in January 2020. This bottle of Sarorun Kamuy Single Malt, bottled in June 2020, is the second release in the series. It was distilled in 2016 and matured in bourbon, sherry, red wine, and Japanese Mizunara oak casks. ‘Sarorun Kamuy’ translates to ‘white crane’ in the language of the Ainu people, the original inhabitants of Hokkaido. The name refers to the red-crowned cranes that live on the island, as well as the god of the marshes in Ainu mythology.
