Cragganmore Distillery

The Speyside distillery Cragganmore was founded in 1869 by the experienced distiller John Smith, who previously managed Macallan, Glenlivet, Glenfarclas and Wishaw. It was the first Speyside distillery that used the Strathspey railway system for transport. They even had their own siding! Cragganmore was renovated and modernized by the famous distillery architect Charles Doig in 1901. The distillery stayed in the Smith family until 1923, when it was sold to the newly-formed Cragganmore-Glenlivet Distillery Co. The Distillers Company Limited (DCL) obtained 50% of Cragganmore in 1927. In 1965, DCL bought the remainder of the distillery and became its sole owner. Cragganmore was at the forefront of distillery innovation. By 1972, all the distillery’s stills had been converted to steam heating. Cragganmore is currently in the hands of Diageo due to its acquisition of DCL. Cragganmore is said to be one of the most complex Speyside single malts, but, being one of the smallest distilleries in Speyside, it is also in limited supply.
