Haitian Rum
Haiti occupies the western side of the island named Hispaniola by Christopher Coloumbus. Columbus founded a Spanish settlement on the island, but in 1697 Haiti was ceded to the French. It became the most lucrative possession in the French Empire due to the slave trade and sugar plantations. In fact it’s thought that Haiti might have had the first sugar mills in the Caribbean. Like many other Caribbean islands, a Haitian Rum industry grew up around the sugar plantations but Haiti is especially well known for their agricultural Haitin Rums. Known as clairin, this spirit is produced from fresh sugar cane juice rather than molasses and has a fresh, grassy quality. The country has over 500 micro distilleries producing clairin as well as other well known brands like Barbancourt.
