Braeval Distillery
The Speyside distillery Braeval was founded in 1973 by Chivas Brothers, then part of the Canadian drinks giant Seagram’s. It was originally known as Braes of Glenlivet, but the name was changed to Braeval to avoid any confusion with the more famous Glenlivet Distillery. Chivas Brothers was taken over by the French company Pernod Ricard in 2001, and a year later the Braeval distillery was mothballed. When new markets got interested in Scotch whisky, the distillery was reopened and production restarted in July 2008. Braeval is rarely seen as a single malt, even by independent bottlers. The first official bottling, a 16-year-old single cask, was released in 2017. Fun fact: located at an altitude of 354 meters, Braeval is the highest distillery in Scotland!
